After I finished my Post Graduation in English Language and Literature I thought I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I thought I would be surrounded by books and writing all the time. I thought maybe I would teach or do something that has to do with academics. Digital marketing was not something I thought about all. To be honest I did not even know what Digital marketing meant then.
I spent most of my time reading novels and poems and writing assignments. That is when I found out something about myself. I love English Language and Literature. What I love more is the power of words. I love how a simple line can make someone feel happy or sad. I love how a story can make people feel like they are not alone. I love how the right message can stay with someone for a time.
After I finished my Post Graduation I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. That is when I came across Digital marketing. At Digital marketing seemed like something that had to do with technology and business which is not what I studied in English Language and Literature.. I was curious. I started learning about Digital marketing. And then I realized something that changed everything: Digital marketing is about communication. That is something I learned about in my English Language and Literature class.
When I started working in Digital marketing I saw how much my English Language and Literature background was helping me. I was writing content for Digital marketing. Creating captions and building blogs for Digital marketing. I was shaping website text into something that people would want to read. All of that depended on how I could use words to connect with people. While other people were learning how to write for Digital marketing I already knew about tone and emotion and clarity and storytelling from my English Language and Literature studies.
Digital marketing showed me a way of writing. Before I wrote to express my thoughts. Now I write to help brands talk to their audience through Digital marketing. I learned that a blog is not something you write. It helps a website get noticed through Digital marketing. A caption is not a sentence. It starts a conversation with people. A website is not a place with information. It is the voice of a brand that uses Digital marketing.
This journey made me realize that my Post Graduation in English Language and Literature was not separate from Digital marketing. In fact it was my strength in Digital marketing. I understood language and people and emotions from my English Language and Literature studies which helped me understand how audiences think and respond online to Digital marketing.
Today I see myself as someone who combines creativity with purpose. I use my love for English Language and Literature to create content for Digital marketing. I use Digital marketing knowledge to make that content work for businesses.
Looking back I am happy that I did not just stick to one thing after I finished my Post Graduation. Instead I let my skills guide me towards something. My journey from English Language and Literature to Digital marketing was not planned. It feels right.
I really believe that the skills we learn are never wasted. They just find ways to be useful in fields, like Digital marketing.
